The elementary school programs include seven sequential themes for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Students learn the basic concepts of business, economics and how education is relevant to the workplace.
The sequential activities build on studies from each preceding grade. The
elementary programs teach students that people assume roles as individuals,
consumers and workers in an expanding cultural environment that extends from
the self and family to global relations.
Ourselves (recommended for kindergarten)
Students are introduced to basic personal and economic issues and the roles
people play as workers, consumers and family members.
Our Families (recommended for 1st grade)
Students learn about the role of families in the local economy, the jobs
they have, and their economic needs and wants.
Our Community (recommended for 2nd grade)
Students participate in activities that demonstrate the responsibilities of
and opportunities available to citizens in their economic community.
Our City (recommended for 3rd grade)
Students conduct business operations, make city-planning decisions, and
examine economic development issues.
Our Region (recommended for 4th grade)
Students learn about state economies, the economic resources of regions, and
decisions businesses must make.
Our Nation (recommended for 5th grade)
Students are introduced to the concept of globalization of business as
it relates to the various careers they may chose to pursue and the need for
entrepreneurial thinking.
JA More than Money
(recommended for grades 3rd – 5th during after-school hours)*
Students are engaged in academically enriching and experiential learning
lessons in economics and business. Students build on their understanding of
money basics and money management and apply those skills to daily life.
Volunteer time commitment is minimal; 5 weekly sessions for
approximately 30-45 minutes each visit. In essence, for about 2 ½ hours of
time, volunteers can enrich the life of a child who truly needs their
guidance and example as a positive role model. All JA volunteers
attend an orientation where they receive all of the materials and lesson
plans necessary to conduct the programs.
* JA More than Money has 6 lessons.
