Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I volunteer for Junior Achievement?
Our core purpose is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. We all benefit from children who grow up to be capable, educated citizens, active community members, responsible employees and future leaders.

How does Junior Achievement accomplish its purpose?
Volunteers are the core of Junior Achievement's success! Our volunteers are role models who deliver JA's hands-on activities to students directly in the classroom. They individualize JA's easy-to-follow lesson plans with their unique work and life experiences.

Who volunteers to teach Junior Achievement programs?
Junior Achievement volunteers come from diverse backgrounds. Our volunteers span all age groups and include business people, parents, military personnel, retirees, networking groups and college students. We are always seeking support from new companies and organizations to collaborate with so we can reach more students! Click here for a list of the generous companies & organizations whose employees visit our classrooms.

Do I need expert teaching skills?
JA will teach you everything you need to know to present our interactive hands-on activities. JA provides training, easy to use materials, a concise Guide for Volunteers and support to help every volunteer have a successful experience. One of the benefits of volunteering is having the opportunity to gain teaching experience and sharpen presentation skills.

How much time do I need to commit to JA?
The time commitment can range from 5 –10 classroom visits, each lasting 30-45 minutes, but the best part about being a JA volunteer is the flexibility. Our teachers understand that you might travel or attend meetings. They will work with you to schedule the day and time of your visits.

Volunteers in the elementary grades K-5 present 5 activities. Middle grades volunteers present 6-8 activities. The high-school volunteer serves as a resource person, sharing knowledge and experience with students in 8-10 sessions.

What tools are provided for me?
Junior Achievement provides volunteers with prepared activities, classroom materials and training, all to ensure that volunteers feel comfortable prior to stepping into the classroom. The orientation (approximately 1 hour) includes: classroom management, understanding and presenting the JA curriculum, the dynamics of working with the classroom teacher and how to communicate effectively with the students. The orientations are held at the Junior Achievement office. JA can also provide a group training at your company/organization (minimum 3 volunteers).

Will I be alone in the classroom?
No. The teacher stays in the classroom. JA is a teaching partnership. The volunteer presents each activity and the teacher provides classroom management, offers insights into the class and helps out if the volunteer needs assistance.

Where can I volunteer?
Every year teachers in Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties request JA programs. The Available Class List is where you can choose a class that is close to home or work for you. Junior Achievement staff will match you with a grade level of your choice. Because JA teaches K-12th grade, we can match you with a grade with which you will feel most comfortable. What qualifications do I need?
Junior Achievement makes it easy for you to be a hit with the kids. All you need is enthusiasm, commitment to the class you teach and the desire to make a difference.

What happens once I sign up?
After you select a school and program that is convenient, you will attend a JA training session (about 1 hour) to receive your program materials, teacher name and school location. You then contact your teacher and set up your visits. The JA staff will contact you throughout the experience to support you!

How do I sign up?
Contact Kelly Hatgas or Stephany Dann by calling (216) 861-8080. Or click here to fill out an involvement form and JA will contact you!

How can JA afford to provide its programs at no cost to the schools?
Junior Achievement is a not-for-profit organization that is supported by the generosity of the greater Cleveland area community so that we can provide our programs at no cost to the schools and students we serve. We receive contributions from corporations, foundations, individuals and fundraising events. Here is a list of some of our generous supporters.
